Why VMG?
It is from Mark's sailing career that the choice of our company name, VMG, comes. VMG is a nautical term for "velocity made good." As Mark explains, "it is actually a mathematical calculation for how much progress or speed you are making while you sail at an angle to the wind." In sailing it is impossible to sail directly into the wind. Therefore, the fastest way towards a particular point is not always a direct route. VMG measures how much speed you are producing toward your ultimate goal as you move at an angle to the wind.
The basis of using VMG as a concept for a company involved in competitive athletics is that "smart speed" is more important than "absolute speed." A sailor with more boat speed will lose to a sailor with better VMG.
The concept of "smart speed" applies to many athletic events. In cycling, for example, the smarter cyclists who can race toward the front of the pack while conserving speed by drafting, usually beat faster cyclists who do not ride as efficiently. Most top athletes differentiate themselves by using their superior mental capacity to capture the most from their abilities. This is the concept behind VMG: smart speed beats absolute speed.
The VMG Logo
Our company's logo is based on sketches from Leonardo da Vinci and his work on proportions of the human body, particularly da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.
